We decided to have our garden landscaped early 2024. The garden set up we inherited with the house was a multi-level landscape with old brick steps and slopes, raised brick planters and lots and lots of conifers, which took up approx. 11m2 of our garden footprint.
Our soakaway had failed a few months prior and needed a new one installed, that helped us take the plunge to have the garden excavated.
I wanted to achieve a child friendly garden, all one level, well balanced with a good ratio of turf to patio area. I wanted to remove the conifers to gain extra valuable space and retain the beautiful copper beech tree that was planted in the late 80's.
I love the privacy and shade the tree gives us in the summer and the wildlife it attracts all year round. It has become a real focal point.
We dug down to level the garden so needed to think about retaining walls on all sides of the garden. I opted for timber railway sleepers.
I wanted to incorporate a veggie patch for the girls so they could grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers.

For us, the results have been life changing. We reconfigured and landscaped our garden to gain a new usable space in our home. A once avoided space was now the place where we wanted to be the most.
We now have a child friendly, welcoming space that we can enjoy with the kids, family and friends. The design was uncomplicated and practical, easy to maintain and moving forward we can easily adapt it to suit our needs.
No longer am I holding my breath as the children run around the garden for fear of them falling on or down brick steps!
I back filled the raised sleeper beds we'd created with compost, herbs and bee friendly flowering plants. The herbs are conveniently located next to our outdoor kitchen area, complete with pizza oven - which I have to say is a game changer.
The kids got their veggie patch and to date have grown, strawberries, carrots, peas, a variety of lettuces, cucumbers, sunflowers and wildflowers. It is a real
